The round table on the topic of: “Development of voluntary certification as an instrument of environmental preservation” was organized by BIOFIN – UNDP initiative on preservation of biodiversity, in partnership with corporate development agency CSR Central Asia.
The main goal of the event — to organize the dialogue platform with participation of public authorities, private sector, business associations, expert community and NPO for comprehensive discussion of prospects of voluntary certification, with focus on nature protection aspects of the international and private standards.
Within the seminar, messages on the legislative basis of voluntary certification in the Kyrgyz Republic have been presented; the review of voluntary international standards and the systems of eco-certification in the world and the Kyrgyz Republic was made. Special focus within the discussions has been given to organizational, institutional and economic barriers of advancing voluntary certification in the country and their possible solutions.
The experience of business sector on the questions of benefits and introduction of voluntary eco-certification, particularly standards already functioning in the Kyrgyz Republic, were presented within the frameworks of panel discussion. They were: ISO 14000 on environmental management system, ISO 51000, Fair Trade standard, FSC, standard of organic agricultural products BIO KG, National standard Halal, CBT hospitality standard, system of voluntary eco-certification “Green Office”, and others.
